QUALIFYING CRITERIA AND APPLICATION
PROCEDURES
Students interested in any type of work study
award must apply each year by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The resulting federal need analysis
aids in determining eligibility for work study. Students cannot complete the FAFSA earlier than January 1st and are encouraged
to apply no later than March 1st of each year for the upcoming award year. The award year begins the first day of the fall
term and ends the last day of summer session two.
Students are awarded on an individual basis.
An award is the maximum amount that may be earned by the student during the specified award period. The award reflects the
100% earnings amount, not the matching percentage. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure the earnings do not
exceed the award. If earnings exceed the award, the employer must pay 100%. Awards are subject to revision, increase or decrease
because of changes to a student's situation, and/or availability of funding.
Federal and state programs require
that students maintain a minimum enrollment of six credits (undergraduates) or five credits (graduates) each semester. Summer
session enrollments are combined and must total six credits (undergraduate) or five credits (graduate). Students awarded
work study must maintain satisfactory academic status. Work study students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of
2.0 (undergraduates) or 3.0 (graduates).
VCU full-time and part-time staff are ineligible
for work study funds.
